Research Overview

Dr. Tian is an atmospheric and climate research scientist in the Earth Science Section at NASA Jet Propulsion Laboratory (JPL), California Institute of Technology (Caltech), and a project scientist in the Joint Institute for Regional Earth System Science and Engineering (JIFRESSE) at University of California, Los Angeles (UCLA). His research focuses on producing and analyzing satellite remote-sensing datasets for climate diagnostics and modeling studies. He is an expert on the Atmospheric Infrared Sounder (AIRS) Level 3 (L3) and Observations for Model Intercomparison Project (Obs4MIPs) products, tropical deep convection, Madden-Julian Oscillation (MJO), diurnal cycle, intertropical convergence zone (ITCZ), MJO-related aerosol and trace gas variations, and climate model evaluation. Dr. Tian has successfully won and completed several openly competed NSF and NASA research projects. As of 04/14/2020, he has 28 first-authored publications and 70 publications in total including 55 peer-reviewed journal articles and book chapters and 15 technical reports and miscellaneous papers. His current H-index is 22 according to the Web of Science (WOS) and 25 according to the Google Scholar (GS).
