Graduate student Bob Kopp stands on the rhyolite dome of
Panum Crater, the northernmost in the Mono Crater chain,
near Lee Vining, California. This crater erupted about 600
years B.P. The linear foothills of the Sierras in the distance
are lateral moraines of the glaciers that once flowed down
these flanks. The last glaciers in this area disappeared
around 11,000 years B.P. Volcanic and glacial deposits were
two major topics of the November 2003 Ge 112 field trip, during
which this photo was taken.
