Graduate student Bruce Hsu stands before a roadcut near Mill Creek in Mono Basin, California. The brown lacustrine layers are composed primarily of palagonite grains (basaltic glass, erupted underwater). Some disturbance, possibly an earthquake, caused the upper half of the palagonite deposit to slide to the right along a detachment and deform.
