During the GPS Division's recent student field trip to South Africa
a stop was made at the Amplats platinum mine. The group, decked out
in full gear and squeezed together like white-coated sardines, are
standing in one of the numerous shafts of the Amplats platinum mine
near Rustenberg, South Africa. The group visited the UG2 chromitite
layer 500 meters (1600') below the surface, where anorthosite and
chromitite layering in the Bushveld intrusion may be found. These
are the same layers the group saw at the Dwars River, 300 kilometers
to the east.
