During the GPS Division's recent student field trip to South Africa
a stop was made at the pinnacle, a quartzite column at the Great
Escarpment to the west of Kruger National Park. The Great Escarpment
features nearly 500 meters (1600') of elevation change over just
a few kilometers. The base of the escarpment is often enshrouded
in misty clouds, giving the impression that one is standing at the
edge of the world.
