Crystals of hemimorphite, Zn₄Si₂O₇(OH)₂·H₂O, from Chihuahua, Mexico, contain hydrogen ions which display dynamic disorder through proton hopping and contribute to a low temperature phase transition. The study of hydrous components in minerals and glasses is an important part of mineralogical and petrological research at Caltech.
