Crystals of hemimorphite, Zn4Si2O7(OH)2·H2O,
from Chihuahua, Mexico, contain hydrogen ions which display dynamic
disorder through proton hopping and contribute to a low temperature
phase transition. The study of hydrous components in minerals and
glasses is an important part of mineralogical and petrological research
at Caltech.
