Advanced Theory and Computation of the Properties of Materials

Ronald Cohen

Visiting Professor of Materials Science and Geophysics

This special course, which is planned for this year only, covers an interdisciplinary field that will be important for all scientists who deal with materials, whether they are in the fields of Earth science, materials research, solid mechanics, solid state chemistry, and condensed matter physics. Already in condensed matter physics, about half of the published literature uses a theoretical treatment. Not only practitioners of theory will need to understand this material, but also experimentalists, as they will need to read and critically evaluate theoretical literature. Not all theory is created equal! Scientists will need to understand the underlying assumptions, weaknesses, and strengths of various methods. Furthermore, experimentalists will need to be comfortable doing their own computations when necessary to help plan experiments and interpret results. Many people are turning to black box codes, but is the black box correct, and what if you want to change the code or add a new feature?
